Seashore libraray, the most beautiful library in the world
Seashore library, the most beautiful and solitary library in the world
The ‘Most Beautiful Library in the World’ is also the most solitary: the Seashore Library.
Designed by Vector Architects, the project can be found in the Hebei province of China, and its walls almost brush up against the shores of the cold Yellow Sea. Despite being only three hours from Beijing, the library is completely isolated. Upon reaching its location the inhabitant is transported, stepping into a completely different world.
Composed of three main rooms, the building presents itself as a heap of irregular volumes:
The reading area, considered the most important section of the project, is an enormous terraced space which descends and reaches out toward the sea. At its base, the façade of the building is realized in enormous, movable glass walls that open and close according to the weather.
Conversely, a curved volume tightly defines the edge of the mediation room, allowing soft, suffused light to penetrate its interior. The view is characterized by a single detail – the vast, immense horizon.
The third large space is dedicated to events, containing relaxation and eating areas.
The glass and concrete library that stands directly on the sand
Materials chosen for the construction of the library were selected as a reference to nature and the surrounding landscape. The project is dominated by textured concrete which simulates the footprints and marks left on the sand. The central block of the structure is interrupted by ample, transparent glass panes and slices of light between walls and ceilings.
The Seashore Library was built in only ten months, yet it ranks first as this century’s quietest and most fascinating library.
