The Boeri's vertical gardens are being built in Milan
A Vertical Garden in the centre of Milan
Stefano Boeri was born in Milan on 25 th November 1956. Son of an architect, he graduated at the Polytechnic of Milan and obtained a Ph.D from the IUAV of Venice.
During his career he has regenerated several sea areas including the port of Marseille, Genoa, Thessaloniki, Trieste and many urban areas in Rome, Milan, Beijing, Moscow... The Vertical Gardens that are being built next year in the Isola district, in Milan, are one of his famous projects. The structure consists of two skyscrapers, respectively, of one hundred and eighty meters high, whose aim will be to bring man closer to nature through a wide biodiversity that will be installed along the facades of the two buildings.
Selected by a team of botanists, ethologists and structural engineers, more than eleven thousand species of trees, shrubs and plants, will be installed.
The presence of a wide variety of plants and shrubs will take important advantages: the leaves of trees, absorbing excess carbon dioxide and fine particles, will improve the air quality. They also reduce the temperature range, create a natural sound insulation and protect from the wind. The setting of the plants on the facades was also designed to respect the seasonal changing, solar exposure and the their position. During the months, thus, the shrubs will change their colors, changing also the entire architecture, going from delicate spring pastel colors, to real autumn colors spots.
The vertical Boeri gardens have won numerous awards including the Best European Architecture in 2015 and the Best Worldwide Architecture 2015 as the most beautiful building in the world.
In the heart of one of the most cahotic Italian cities, the two towers will grant an approach to nature that is gradually disappearing from our cities, creating a small green island fit to live in and becoming a symbol of innovation and change.
